This year’s one-day Family Literacy Workshop will provide opportunities to

share and learn from other practitioners,
learn how to develop an integrated instructional unit,
receive all the integrated units created during the workshop as well as other helpful materials, and
celebrate the uniqueness and value of family literacy.

Featured Speakers:

MARILYN BOX is a faculty member of the Penn State University’s William Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy and a certified trainer for the National Center for Family Literacy. Ms Box has 30 years of experience working in public schools as a teacher, curriculum specialist and program administrator. She has worked as the coordinator of the family literacy program in Mesa, Arizona, serves as a local evaluator for several Even Start programs, and provides training and technical assistance across the country.

GRETCHEN WRONKA is the Youth Services and Outreach Coordinator for Hennepin County Library, supervising the Outreach Department and the Children’s Readmobile. She has been a leader in state and national library associations and is currently a member of the Governor’s Council on Reading Excellence and the Advisory Council to the University of Minnesota’s Center for Early Education and Development. A past member of the Minnesota Family Literacy Consortium and the Minnesota Family Literacy Conference planning committee, Gretchen continues to be a strong advocate for family literacy.

Family Place Libraries invites you to learn more about what public libraries can do to foster early literacy within their own libraries and communities. This free bi-annual symposium brings together public librarians from around the nation to hear presentations from specialists in children's literature, early literacy, childhood development, and family support, and provides a forum for librarians to network and learn from one another.

The Symposium is free of charge. Register early; space is limited. Registrants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

This year's guest speaker, Vicki Hawley, is the coordinator of professional development in early literacy for the Center for Early Education and Development at the University of Minnesota. Ms. Hawley has a varied child and family teaching background, which includes Minnesota's Early Childhood and Family Education, and Parents as Teachers Projects. She has served as the training coordinator for the Minnesota Early Literacy Project as well as statewide child care training and parent education programs in North Dakota, the literacy home visiting component of the Words Work! initiative in St. Paul and a statewide Head Start/Americorps early literacy initiative in Minnesota. Due to her great curiosity about the process of learning and change in adults, particularly those that work with children, Ms. Hawley views her work both as a vocation and a avocation.

Printable Nursery Rhyme Mini Books now available

The State Library of Louisiana has produced a series of 24 one-page Printable Nursery Rhyme Mini Books for children to color and keep.

Each mini book requires one sheet of 8.5 x 11 paper and just 2 folds. Please encourage staff to print them out and give them to children, parents, and teachers after programs, tours, presentations, as part of preschool outreach book delivery services, etc.

Early Childhood Research Collaborative event

The Early Childhood Research Collaborative, a partnership of CEED and the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, will host a National Invitational Conference on “Critical Issues in Cost Effectiveness in Children’s First Decade.” The conference takes place at the Fed on December 7-8, 2007 and will be open to the public via live broadcast at the U of M’s Humphrey Center. More information will be announced soon.
