Preview of New Chapter Award Opportunities

A ROAST OF JERRY BALDWIN

Jerry Baldwin is retiring from the MN Department of Transportation this year and we are pleased that he has agreed to be roasted by friends, family and colleagues. Jerry's brother, Tom Baldwin, a former teacher, education administrator and mayor of Falcon Heights, will be joined by Marilyn Cathcart of the College of St. Catherine and Jim Byerly of the MN Department of Transportation in sharing their insights into Jerry's character and illustrious library career. All attendees will be invited to share their funny memories of Jerry during the roast as well.

After graduating from the University of Minnesota, where he also attended Library School, Jerry started his library career at the Minnesota Department of Highway's General Library, now known as the Mn/DOT Library. During his 35 plus years in charge of the library, Jerry has seen it through a number of reorganizations that have grown the library from a 700 square foot facility with a staff of 1.5 serving only the department's employees to, at its peak, one of 6,000 square feet with a staff of 9.75, including six professional librarians, serving the state's entire transportation community. He also helped create the University of Minnesota's Center for Transportation Studies Library that currently has one professional librarian and a student intern.

In the library community, Jerry has been involved in a number of professional organizations including stints as chair of SLA's MN Chapter and Transportation Division and president of ASIS&T's MN Chapter, as well as involvement in many committees. He also served as chair of the exhibits committees for two Governor's Pre-White House Conferences on Library and Information Services and the 1979 Annual Meeting of ASIS&T in Minneapolis. For the 1999 Annual Meeting of SLA in Minneapolis, he served as Public Relations chair. He also was the exhibits chair for Minnesota's First All-Association Library Conference and co-chaired the planning committee for the second that, with more than 1,000 attendees, remains the largest state-level library conference ever held in Minnesota. He was also a co-founder of the Capitol Area Library Consortium, a group working on improving the services of Minnesota's state agency libraries.
